The Google Story_Divide and Conquere-[Chapter5]

The google story shows us the power of knowledge capture and sharing, which will lead the company to better heights. The building of the world’s best search engine started in a small garage in a house nearby Menlo Park. After 5 months operating there, they moved into office on University Avenue in downtown Palo Alto. Both Brin and Page the founders of google wanted work to be fascinating and fun and were determined to keep it that way. Neither of the guys had a clear idea of how the company would make money, though it seemed to them that if they had the best search engine, others will definitely want to use it in their organizations. What they found most interesting was the abiding excitement about helping people find information that is more relevant online and faster.
With a quite popular at the Stanford University, their search engine was handling about 100000 queries per day. This growth has been entirely through word of mouth email and through instant messages. Soon Google the research project become google.com and started rapidly hiring talented people to bring the latest and greatest technology to the web.
The better-known commercial search engines at that time including the Alta Vista, Excite, and Lycos were lost journeying from their core mission of investing in better search technology to the advertising dollar flow and was lost inside that trend. The resulting decline in the search quality drove users to hunt for alternatives and as they did, more and more found their way to google. The mention in the pc magazine put google on the radar screen of 1000’s of people for the first time as their Silicon Valley neighbors blew millions of dollars in advertising; google grew in popularity and recognition without spending a dime. To ensure the accuracy, speed and reliability of every search the pair have invested most of the money they raised in additional computer hardware and improving software. They had a target in their mind: becoming dominant in search, at the exact time that others were abandoning it.
As the number of the queries on the google grew, they also began to recognize that they have unknowingly developed an extremely popular brand name and logo. In order to handle the increasing number of queries day by day, google was looking forward to add more number of computer into their technology and that required high investment. The challenged faced by them was not attract investors to invest in google, but they were afraid that if some investors gets full control over the google most probably they will try to milk revenue from the firm very soon and will not lead to innovation and betterment of the google. So what they wanted was huge investors to invest in google provided the control of the company should rest in the hands of Brin and Page.
The original Google business idea had nothing to do with advertising. It was aimed at licensing the technology to variety of other internet companies and enterprises. Brin and page was able to found such investors whom they wanted for the company’s growth within a short period. The reason why the investors invested in google was mainly because of the service and quality of information google provided that was demonstrably better than you could get anywhere else, as the internet grew search would be the most important and definitely there will be some benefits from being around the evolution of internet.
With the investment from the investors, where google is heading towards is, to build a perfect search engine that will process and understand all the information’s in the world. Search is extremely challenging and improvements in the technology are significant. One hundred million web searches are performed every day. Quickly finding the right information is critical for web users in many professions. Google revolutionized search technology and delivers information in a way that focus on the users.
The mystery remained: how did google plan to make money? (The time they were trying to attract investors-not current situation)
